Midnight Club canceled at beleaguered Rockstar San Diego?

Source: A blog posted to game-industry news site Gamasutra.

BitterPartyOfMany also claims that Rockstar dismantled the San Diego studio’s Midnight Club team. “Please, someone explain why the profitable and very functional Midnight Club team was ripped apart, their technology thrown away (after Midnight Club Los Angeles), and everyone who wasn’t fired or quit was shoved onto a project that has been struggling for well over 4 years?” the posting states.

To the owners of Rockstar, as an avid Midnight Club gamer, if you can’t get your shit together and produce and direct another successful Midnight Club turn the project over to my team and we will split the profits.
Copyright © 2010 iancrossland.us. The world premiere of Halo Reach is just a few short days away, December 12th to be accurate. You’ll need to tune into the Spike TV Video Game Awards to witness this event of events, and if Spike’s Geoff Keighley is to be trusted, Reach is going to be huge.

The sequel to the critically-acclaimed Dead Space with a Rorschach blot and some Unitology script over the weekend, EA confirmed today that Dead Space 2 is in the works. The new game will feature the return of Isaac Clarke, the hero of the original, as he meets news characters and employs new tools to slice and dice the Necromorph onslaught. “Survival isn’t the only thing on Isaac’s mind in Dead Space 2,” the publisher said. “This time, he calls the shots.”

“The infection continues to spread throughout space and our hero Isaac Clarke is the only person able to contain it. There are still loads of Necromorphs that need killing!” said Dead Space 2 Executive Producer Steve Papoutsis. “In Dead Space 2, not everything is exactly as it seems. Expect plot twists that will surprise you and a huge cast of twisted, disgusting monsters that are sure to scare the daylights out of you.”

I’m not sure how I feel about the apparent “Rambofication” of the intrepid Mr. Clarke in the new game, but it’s way too early to get worked up over that. At this point, I’m just happy to hear that the saga will continue. Dead Space 2 is currently in development at Visceral Games for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. No release date has been announced.

Here’s a little proof that Microsoft is actually working on next generation technology and Halo will be one of the games that will power this technological wonder that will be Xbox 720. So technically speaking we’d see a new version of Halo with the launch of its next platform.

“Job Description: Microsoft’s new Halo Studio team is looking for a technical and highly talented program manager to work with an engineering team to help define the next generation of gaming software technology. As part of a next generation team, you’ll be instrumental in helping to lead the development of the engine that will power future experiences for the next generation of gaming platforms. You will work closely with the software architect and the senior development team behind this critical new effort. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with artists, designers, and other creative functions within MGS to ensure that we are building the best possible platform for content creators.
Well it certainly seems Microsoft’s heard Master Chief’s scream for the distant corners of space and sent in a brand new team to create an epic blockbuster once again.
Copyright © 2010 iancrossland.us.

Rockstar co-founder Sam (no, not Dan) Houser doesn’t know if the next Grand Theft Auto title after IV will properly fit onto the 360’s standard-sized discs.

“One of the problems with the 360, and it affects games like Grand Theft Auto if you think about how much content we put in the actual machine, is the fact that they don’t have a significantly larger storage medium than the previous systems. It’s a slightly bigger DVD disc,” Houser told 1up.

Then take into account that not all Xbox 360s come with a hard drive. It’s here that things get super sticky. “The 360 is going to have to get ’round this issue we’re talking about…hopefully, they’re going to adopt one of those in the next year or so, because it’s going to become more of an issue. If we’re filling up the disc right now, where are we going? It’s not like our games are going to get any smaller.”

The delay heard round the world was mostly credited to technical issues during IV’s development. Some said the 360 didn’t have enough space to hold the game; others heard that the PS3 version was having big problems of its own. Whatever the case, Houser isn’t telling. “Both machines are absolutely fantastic, but they both come with strengths and weaknesses. The strength of the 360 is a very, very accessible, familiar, effective environment to work in. You’re making the game from the get-go, everyone understands its PC environment — boom, off we go. It’s pretty good.”

Development on the PS3 version wasn’t too smooth early on, however. “I think it was challenging for a lot of companies, but it’s also a machine where, now that we’ve got comfortable with it — I don’t want to say we’ve cracked it, but we’ve got comfortable with it — we know we can make our games.”

Many have posed a big question that’s on my mind, for sure: Does either version look better than the other? “There’s a slight difference in the way they look,” Houser admitted. “I think that’s to do with really low-level technical stuff that I’m not the guy to explain. The 360 games have a certain look to them; PS3 games have a certain look to them. I like the way [the PS3] renders.” He concluded, “There’s a certain kind of softness without being blurry — some warmth to it — and then there’s a certain more clinical element to how the 360 looks.”

Every Halo fan obviously knows the (original) Halo trilogy is over (Halo 3 was left with an open ending). But with Ensemble Studios working on the Halo Wars RTS prequel and an episodic Halo: Chronicles cinematic-game trilogy series still in the works by Peter Jackson, would a Halo 4 FPS really be that far fetched? Time to line up the facts…

July 14th 2006: Bungie audio director, Marty O’Donnell, said at the UK Game Developers Conference that “We all want Halo to be the great ending to an epic trilogy. We look at what Peter Jackson did with the Lord of the Rings films – which each film bettering the previous one and that is what we are aiming for.”

September 25th 2007: At the launch of Halo 3 the cinematic designer, Lee Wilson, said “There’s a lot of people who have been working on Halo much longer than us two have and they’re really interested in exploring new games, new stories, and whatever comes out of those conversations is what we’re going to pursue. We’re still going to make games for us.” And Joe Tung, multiplayer producer, said that the team was “figuring out right now what we’re working on next. We really don’t know what that is yet but as soon as we know, everyone else will know. Halo 4 is not in development.”

October 8th 2007: Halo movie director, Neill Blomkamp, confirmed that the Halo “film is entirely dead,” but consoled fans of the series by mentioning that “Well, we are already at work on another Halo game — I wouldn’t call it ‘Halo 4?, but it is based in the Halo Universe and represents a collaboration between Bungie and Peter Jackson. Halo 3 was definitely not the last Bungie Halo game.”

November 9th 2007: Bungie studio manager, Harold Ryan, mentioned that “Obviously Microsoft wanted us to make more Halo games. Both I and some of the more senior guys from the original Halo game have deep piles of game designs for the Halo universe that we are excited to build at some point. If the stars align and motivations are good and the platforms are right we’ll do them.”

Now in 2008: Bungie are still supporting the Xbox 360-exclusive Halo 3 with new map packs, as well as the above mentioned two Halo game spin-offs that are set for tentative Q4 2008 releases. It does look like they want to take a break from the series, which might be part of the reason why Bungie became independent from Microsoft. But since money makes the world ago around, and of course fans do want more, it’s doubtful Microsoft or Bungie will want to give up on the Halo series that as of October 4th, 2007, combined sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Perhaps by the time the Xbox 720 launches in 2011-2012 we’ll hear about Master Chief’s comeback in Halo 4.
